Warren Quinn

CPO Warren "G" Hoover Quinn, Ret. 89 of Depot St. died October 20, 2013 at Kings Mountain Hospice House. He was born on Feb 12, 1924 in Catawba Co. a son of the late Clarence and Hattie Ramsey Quinn.

Mr. Quinn is the last known NC veteran to have served in WW II, Korea, and Vietnam.
Chief Quinn enlisted in his Navy in Jan of 1942 shortly after Pearl Harbor and his career lasted 33 years. His duty stations include Miami FL, Norfolk, VA, USNAS Quonse Point RI, Guam Marianas Islands, Bainbridge MD, Germany, France, Brazil, and Subic Bay, Philippines, Washington D.C., US Naval Air Station, Anacostia, D.C., and served on the following USS vessels, the Patoka, New Jersey, Barr, LST 552, Botetourt, Protector, and the Leonard F. Mason helping with and commended with the recovery Gemini 8 capsule with astronauts Neil Armstrong and David Scott. He received numerous medals for his service including American Area, 2 Stars Asiatic Pacific, 2 stars Philippine Liberation, WW II Victory, National Service Defense, 5 Good conduct Medals, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal during Ground Operations in Vietnam. Hoover retired from Naval service in 1975 and returned to his hometown of Cherryville where he was active in the American Legion Post 100, VFW Post 5200, the Last Man's Club, and the LST Association. He spent his free time with his three grandchildren and watching sports, especially American Legion Post #100 Baseball.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by siblings Shirley Quinn, Margaret "Boot" Beam, Nell Homesley, Vera Beam, Hinse Quinn, Clarence E. Quinn, Jr., and Loy Quinn.

Survivors include his daughter Belle Jackson and son-in-law, Heath, of Cherryville, grandchildren, Hunter, Carlton and Carlie Grace Jackson , sister Helen Beam of Cherryville, and brother Thomas Quinn of Charlotte.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 4 PM at First Baptist Church with Dr. Vince Hefner officiating with burial in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wed. from 2-3:45 PM.
