Sybil Ellen Sellers Disbrow, 64, died Dec. 3, 2014, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Charlotte to Pete and Marjorie Sellers on Oct. 11, 1950. She grew up in Belmont and graduated from South Point High School.
A talented artist who signed her work "Almajohn," Sybil studied art at the San Francisco Art Institute, University of Georgia and Sacred Heart College. Her paintings won numerous awards and honors including the Paul C. Rhyne Competition; Red Clay Survey 2012-Contemporary Southern Art, Huntsville Museum of Art; The Artist's Magazine Over 60 Art Competition; The Artist's Magazine 29th Annual Artist Competition; and The Story of the Creative-An International Exhibition in New York City.
Sybil and her art were featured in professional and local publications including "Art Galleries and Artists of the South" and "Denver Weekly," which headlined the story "A Trip into the World of Almajohn."
Specializing in unique floral portraits, Sybil described her paintings this way: "Everything I want to say I can say through nature." Her paintings elevated the flower to a new status with intriguing patterns and bold, saturated colors combined with rich texture. Her work can be seen at almajohn.com.
In addition to her parents, Sybil is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Gini Sellers of Denver; daughter and son-in-law, Maya and Brian Love of Charlotte; and four grandchildren, Rachel Grace Sellers, Zachary Sellers, Ethan Love and Emilee Love.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at 2:30 PM at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Rev. Angela Hollar officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Cherryville. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:30 to 2:15 prior to the service at the church.
