Ray Mauney

Ray D. Mauney, Sr. passed away on November 26, 2013 at the age of 78 after battling cancer of the esophagus and liver for the past two years.

Born on October 3, 1935 in Cherryville, N.C., he was the youngest of five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd L. Mauney. He graduated from Cherryville High School in 1953.
He attended Wake Forest College (now University) on a baseball scholarship, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, and a member of the Demon Deacon Baseball Team.

Ray married his high school sweetheart, Marianna Houser Mauney, on August 18, 1957. They moved to Gainesville, GA where he began his business career as an Industrial Engineer, Cost Accountant and General Accountant with Milliken & Co. After several promotions, and various moves around the county, Ray left Milliken in 1975 and moved back to Gainesville when he was named Comptroller for Mansfield Oil Company. He held this position until 1980. In early 1980 he was named Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Mr. B's Oil Company in Winder, Georgia, a position he held until retirement in 1990. Not content to sit still, Ray was tasked with liquidating the assets of Davis Washington Lumber Company, and continued to work as an independent contractor for Garner & Associates CPA firm of Atlanta, coordinating and conducting financial audits.

Ray was active in the local community as a member of various organizations, including the Elks Club, the American Legion, and the Chattahoochee County Club. In 1966 he was appointed to head the General Business Central Division of the Gainesville Hall County Community Chest. He held the same position again in 1967 becoming the first person to be selected twice to that role. He was a former Vice President of the Gainesville Lions Club and was named Lion of the Year in 1968. Also in 1968 he was named Chairman of the Gainesville-Hall County Community Chest. Ray was a longtime member of the Gainesville First Baptist Church.

Ray is preceded in death by his youngest son, William Nelson Mauney, his parents Floyd L. and Lula Beam Mauney, his sister Ruth Mauney, and his brothers Harold Mauney, and Robert Mauney.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marianna House Mauney; his son Ray D. Mauney, Jr., daughter-in-law Lisa and granddaughter Lauren; his daughter Melissa Mauney Simpson, son-in-law Klay and grandsons, K.J. and Carter; a sister, Marie Mauney Nestlerode and a brother, Joel Mauney, sisters-in-law Eloise Mauney, Joanne Mauney, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by special family friend Evelyn Hanes Kephart.

Graveside Inurnment Services will be held at the Shady Grove Baptist Church, 3240 Tryon Courthouse Road, Cherryville, North Carolina on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors after the service in the Family Life Center.
