Mary Mullen Black, 92, of Cherryville died Friday Dec. 13, 2013 at Kings Mountain Hospice House. She was born on March 19, 1921 in Cherryville, a daughter of the late Claude and Belle Mullen. Mrs. Black was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church where she belonged to the Sallie Quinn Sunday School Class. She was a long time volunteer with the church's "DOT" team, visiting shut-ins as long as her health permitted. She was retired from the Carlton Yarn Mill, where she worked for most of her life, and made many lifelong friends.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by brothers Herbert, Jay, Claude Jr., Mack, David and Billy Mullen, and sisters Peg Dreylinger, Dixie Sneed, Cynthia Cline.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 70 years James Eugene Black, daughter Jyma Black Atwell and husband Michael of Cherryville, granddaughters Heather Atwell Carpenter and husband Brandon of Ann Arbor, MI, and Kellyn Atwell of Asheville, sisters Juanita Stepp, Destin, FL; Pearl Rhodes, Chapel Hill; Grace Reed, Pacifica, CA; and Suzie Bumgarner, Littleton, NC. Mary also leaves many dear friends, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews who loved her for her kindness, devotion to her family, and great sense of humor.
Funeral services will be held Sunday Dec. 22 at First Presbyterian Church at 3 PM with Dr. Bill Lowe officiating with burial to follow in the Black Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30-2:45 PM at the church.
