Marty Jim Smith, age 52 of Cherryville, passed away Friday, December 24, 2021 at Atrium Health Charlotte. He was born March 9, 1969 in Cleveland County to Norma Jean Brittain Smith and the late Marvin Smith. He was a former member of Foursquare Gospel. He was previously employed at Travis Knits as well as Walmart Cherryville. Marty always had a smile and a friendly word to share with others. He enjoyed socializing and never met a stranger. Marty was an avid fan of the Steelers. He loved Gospel and Bluegrass Music. He was often found playing games and enjoying social media. However, Marty’s favorite pastime was spending time with family, especially his beloved nephew, Hilan.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jim Wesley Smith, Agnes Frady Smith Bolick, Dewey Bolick, Willard Brittain, Velleree Brittain, and Ina Kay Marshall Brittain; and aunts and uncles, Betty Hamrick, Gene Reinhardt, Robert Kaylor, James Bolick, and Gary Bolick.
Survivors include his mother, Norma Jean Smith; brother, Namon Wesley Smith; nephew, Hilan Wesley Smith; aunts and uncles, Brenda and Whity Turner, Nathalee and Roger Kaylor, Mary Kaylor, and Joe Hamrick; cousins, Roger and Sherry Reinhardt, Loretta Bauer, Angie and Kenneth Martin, Mark and Nicole Kaylor, Sally Branch, Joey Hamrick, Jamie and Robin Hamrick, Josh Kaylor, and Mallory Upton; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral & Cremation Services with Rev. Bobby Holtsclaw and Rev. Billy Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:00 to 1:45 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
