John Marcus "Mark" Black Jr., age 92 of Crescent Dr. died Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at his residence. He was born on March 26, 1923 in Gaston County to the late John Marcus Black Sr. and Isador Carpenter Black. Mr. Black and his wife were the last founding and charter members of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He served his community in various ways throughout his lifetime as he was always a self-employed businessman. He built numerous homes in Cherryville, owned and operated a restaurant and a furniture store, worked in Real Estate and sold cars. Mark was a member of the Cherryville Masonic Lodge #505 A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed reading and working puzzles. He was a people person and loved spending time with friends and family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Marcus "Johnny" Black III; daughter, Jackie Ware; and sister, Jackie Fluhr.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty Wright Black; daughters, Jamie Cain of Cana, VA and Sador Black of Kingsport, TN; son-in-law, Terry Ware of Kings Mountain; grandchildren, Stephanie Wellman and husband, Matthew of Gastonia, John Black IV of Cherryville, Morgan Cain of Cana, VA and Maycee Cain of Cana, VA; and great grandchildren, Brooklyn Black, Holden Wellman, Ava Black, and Landon Whitt.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at Mary's Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites by the Cherryville Lodge #505 A.F. & A.M. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Carpenter's Funeral & Cremation Services.
