Lillie Margaret Poston Lackey passed away peacefully during the morning hours of November 9, 2019. Lillie was born October 30, 1929 to Fibra and Sarah Self Poston in Waco, NC. She attended the old Waco High School and graduated in 1947. Upon graduation, she married the love of her life, T.G. Lackey in 1948. Upon moving to the North Brook community, she and T.G. began their family. Three children came from their union, Mike, Randy, and Susan.
Her pride and joy was her family. Lillie was known as “Mom” to her children’s extensive group of friends. She loved to cook and shared food, fun, and laughter at many family events and reunions. Her cakes were loved by many and she baked and gave many to family and friends throughout the years. She loved to share her recipes and everything she made was delicious. Anyone that came to her home was always offered something to eat and no one ever left hungry.
One of her greatest joys were the years she spent as a teacher’s assistant at North Brook #1 and North Brook #2 schools. She loved to teach and really never quit “teaching” even after she retired. She made many life long friends and touched the lives of many children. She loved to share stories about her unique way of teaching concepts to children. She was firm, fair, and loving to all the children she worked with. Numerous students returned over the years and expressed their gratitude for how she had changed their lives.
In her later years, she began crocheting scarves for friends and family. At last estimate, she had crocheted over 300 scarves to give away. She will be missed by many in her family and community, and she will always be remembered for her sweet and caring heart.
In addition to her parents, Lillie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Thomas Guy “T.G.” Lackey, Jr.; granddaughter, Tara Lackey; brothers, John Poston and Howard Poston; and sister-in-law, LaRue Poston.
Survivors include her children, Michael Lackey and wife, Connie of Sylva, Randy Lackey and wife, Arlette of Cherryville, and Susan Parker and husband, Johnny of Cherryville; honorary son, Duke “Smitty” Smith (Susie) of St. Simons Island, GA; brother, Larry Poston and wife, Sarah of Canton; sister, Shirley McMurray of Shelby; sister-in-law, Ruth Poston; grandchildren, Jenna Bauer (Charlie), Jennifer Thielker (Matthew), Leslie Smith, Morgan Lewis (Spencer), Jake Beam (Becca), Jordan Lackey, Jana Lackey, Wesley Bowyer, Ashley Bowyer, Brett Parker (Samantha), and Mark Parker; eight great grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver, Debbie Greene.
