Kathryn Beam Sappenfield, age 90, of W. Old NC 150 Hwy, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family Thursday, June 30, 2016. She was born September 26, 1925 in Lincoln County to the late L. Berge Beam Sr. and Mattie Kendrick Beam Mauney. During WWII, Kathryn worked for the war effort in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on the Manhattan Project. She was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College and retired after 37 years of teaching. She also owned Merry Oaks Antiques in Crouse with her husband, Oscar. Kathryn was a faithful member of Crouse United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Berge Beam Jr. and sister, Helen Rhodes.
Survivors include her loving husband of 66 years, Oscar F. Sappenfield; nephew, Robert Rhodes (Shaye) of Sherrills Ford; nieces, Susan Rhodes of Clover, SC, Cathy Katz (Mark) of Greensboro, Jodi Adams (Tom) of Kings Mountain, Carol McMahan (Danny) of Dallas, Lisa Hovis (Roger) of Gastonia, and Laura Lowery (Wiley) of Kings Mountain; and numerous great and great great nieces and nephews.
Kathryn was loved by all who knew her and forever touched the lives of her hundreds of students through her long career in education.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 3, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Crouse United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Sanders officiating. Burial will follow at Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 2, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Carpenter's Funeral & Cremation Services in Cherryville.
