David Lester Pope, age 88 of Elm St. passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018 at Alexandria Place of Gastonia. He was born December 3. 1929 in Gaston County to the late James Colin and Georgia Cline Pope. David was a Veteran of the United States Army and served a two year tour in the Korean War. He was a Sergeant and taught M1 Rifle courses. He was retired from Carolina Mills. David was a member of Lincolnton Church of God. He was a devoted Christian who could often be found reading his Bible daily, praying over others, and sharing the love of Christ with everyone. He was a true servant of the Lord. David was also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and going fishing. He was a friend to everyone he met.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Watts Pope; daughter, Shirley Stacy Woody; brothers, Harlon, Gaither, Alvin, Walter, Ralph, and Jesse Pope; and sisters, Etta Lois Rudisill, Eunice Canipe, Druscilla Riddle Tallent, and Minnie Dalton.
Survivors include his daughter, Dianne Curry of Clearwater, FL; grandchildren, David Hammond and wife, Hilary, Shawn Stacy and wife, Teri, and Daniel Hammond and wife, Michelle; great grandchildren, D.J., Drake, Angelina, Hannah, Rylee, Davin, and Kendall; sister, Martha Braden of Cherryville; and son-in-law, Oscar Hammond.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral & Cremation Services with Rev. Dr. Richard King officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery with military honors conducted by Cherryville American Legion Post #100. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:30 to 1:45 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
