With humble acceptance of God’s will and with her family by her side, we announce the passing of Betty Daves Neill, 91, of Cherryville, NC September 6, 2020.
She was born to the late James Philector Daves and Myrtle Mae Newton Daves, September 5, 1929, in Shelby, North Carolina.
Betty is survived by four children: Carroll Neill (Claudia), of Angel Fire NM, Jim Neill (Deborah), of Boiling Springs NC, Pete Neill (Myra L), of Cherryville NC, and Myra Neill (Clay), of Cherryville NC, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brothers Franklin Daves, Bennett Daves and sisters, Reba Beam, Linda Pow, and Sybil Bender.
Betty was predeceased by her loving husband, John Peter Neill, Sr. in 2011, as well as her brothers J.P. Daves, Billy Daves, Clyde Daves and her sister Patsy Ruth Daves.
When Betty’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Betty was an exceptional wife, mother and a remarkable cook who enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, most especially over the holidays.
In addition to being a dedicated and loving mother, Betty also loved working in her yard, and holding various volunteer roles at First Baptist Church. Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her.
She cared deeply for her family, church family, friends and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help.
The family wishes to thank those who have extended their loving support for Betty during her final days and also to Helping Hands of Cleveland County who offered 24/7 care which allowed Betty to stay at home with her family.
A private graveside burial will be held at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery on Wednesday, September 9, 2020.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to either of the following: First Baptist Church 301 E 1st St, Cherryville, NC 28021, Hospice & Palliative Care Lincoln County 900 Dontia Drive, Lincolnton, North Carolina 28092, Shriners Hospitals for Children 950 W Faris Rd, Greenville, SC 29605.
